A woman, identified as Savitri, has lodged a complaint with the Tiruvallur District Collector’s office alleging that her husband, Kandhan Kumar, has lost sensation below the waist due to negligence on the part of doctors at the government hospital.
Narrating the ordeal, Savitri stated, “We were admitted to Tiruvallur Government Hospital on March 10 as my husband was diagnosed with a stomach tumor. He underwent surgery on the 23rd of March. However, there was no response from the medical staff for two to three hours after he was taken inside for the operation. Concerned, I approached the medical staff and found out that a needle had broken during the surgery and that an Operation Light was required. They informed me that they had scratched his stomach. Subsequently, an MRI scan was conducted after 7 o’clock, and we were asked to wait for the results.”
She continued, “However, no further information was provided for six hours. Eventually, it was revealed that there was bleeding in the stomach, and we were advised to take my husband to a government hospital in Chennai if we wanted to save his life. Following the doctors’ advice, we rushed him to a government hospital in Chennai.”
Savitri expressed her anguish, saying, “The doctors in Chennai informed us that there was no chance of my husband being able to walk again. They asked us to prepare ourselves mentally. I have a child with special needs, and I am at a loss. My husband has lost all sensation below the waist and has been unable to use the bathroom without assistance for the past month. I have been the one taking care of him.”
She added, “The doctors in Tiruvallur initially informed us that there was a tumor in his stomach, but they failed to mention that the needle had broken during the injection into his spine. We discovered this only after I inquired about the surgery. Now, they are suggesting that exercise will help improve his condition, but it’s not true. They are trying to cover up their negligence. My husband can’t even sit properly due to the damage to his nerves.”
