Raj, a 58-year old man, had a history of diabetes and hypertension. He was admitted at the hospital with complain of pain under his left arm. Tests performed at the hospital reported coronary artery disease (CAD).

An informed consent must be taken for all interventions or procedures. Consent taken for one procedure is not valid for another one. The only time this rule is exempted is during emergencies. But it was not the case in this instance

The patient, a senior citizen, was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both hip joints. The orthopaedic doctor performed total hip arthroplasty on right side and planned for the same procedure for the left side after some days. The second procedure was postponed due to unfortunate death of patient’s husband.

Delay in providing treatment without any justified cause is medical negligence and not appreciated by courts. This case is an apt example of the fact.

A reputed hospital and its cardiologist doctors were held negligent in this case for delaying a scheduled emergency procedure to accommodate a VIP patient. And also for mismanagement of medical records.
