Doctors claiming to be specialists in an expertise they are not qualified is against the guidelines laid by Medical Council of India. A physician in this case was held negligent by the top Consumer Court for disregarding this rule.

A 17-year-old boy was severely electrocuted. He was rushed to the hospital from a local healthcare centre.

The orthopaedic surgeon performed CT angiography of upper limbs to ensure that blood flow was satisfactory. Thereafter, he performed LD flap surgery on the boy’s left hand to save exposed nerves, blood vessels and muscular tissues.
 

The patient was diagnosed with gall stones by doctor, who was also owner of the hospital. Surgery was planned to remove the stones. But complications set in even before the blade was picked.

The patient complained of severe abdominal pain. She consulted gynaecologist and surgeon at the hospital. The doctors diagnosed recurrent menopausal bleeding and performed laparoscopic hysterectomy.

The patient, in mid-sixties with some psychiatric issues, sustained fracture of right femur. The orthopaedic surgeon performed ORIF procedure. But post-operatively, the operated site kept bleeding.

A young woman in her twenties underwent C-section and delivered a healthy baby. However, her condition worsened soon thereafter. She suffered refractory shock and DIC, and had to be referred to another hospital.

The patient consulted doctors at a hospital as he had rapidly lost eight kilos without any explainable reasons. CT Scan of chest was performed, leading to suspicion of cancer or TB.

The pulmonologist and surgeon advised diagnostic laparoscopy with peritoneal biopsy to confirm diagnosis. Their suspicion of TB was proven, ATT drugs were started.
