Four doctors in Kerala booked for birth of newborn with genetic disorders

hiruvananthapuram: While four doctors were booked at Alappuzha district in Kerala for alleged medical negligence in diagnosing deformities in a fetus, another couple alleged that negligence by doctors at Kozhikode medical college hospital led to deformities to their newborn.

Two doctors of the government women and children hospital in Alappuzha district and two other doctors attached to a private diagnostic lab in the district were booked by the police.

A couple hailing from the district, Anish and Surumi, had filed the complaint against the doctors. They alleged that the child was born with serious deformities and the doctors did not give any information regarding the child's condition during routine checkups or scannings during pregnancy. Surumi, aged 35, delivered the child on November 8. Even after 20 days the child did not even open eyes properly. It also has severe other deformities, they said.

The police registered a case against two doctors of the gynecology department of the government women and child hospital and two doctors of the private diagnostic lab where she was referred for scanning during pregnancy. Sections 125 and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for endangering human life and personal safety were invoked.

Health Minister Veena George had also ordered a probe by a team headed by the health department's additional director.

Meanwhile, another couple hailing from Kozhikode alleged medical negligence leading to deformities for their child and health issues to the mother.
