Doctors reportedly informed the family that the patient was suffering from severe anemia and urgently required one unit of blood.
A tragic incident has unfolded in Assam’s Cachar district, where a newborn died, triggering public outrage after the family accused Shiv Sundari Nari Shikshashram and Antenatal Hospital in Silchar of medical negligence.
The grieving family has accused the hospital and senior doctors of negligence and warned of legal action.
According to the family, an eight-month pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon under the supervision of senior doctor Dr. Pinakpani Dutta.
Doctors reportedly informed the family that the patient was suffering from severe anemia and urgently required one unit of blood. Although the family claims that blood was arranged by 3 pm, it was allegedly administered only around 7 pm, causing a critical delay.
The family member further alleged that the labor pain began around 3 am, but no doctor was present at that crucial time.
On Tuesday morning, a doctor, identified as Dr. Appi, arrived and immediately prepared for surgery. After the operation, the family was informed that the newborn had died, though the mother’s life was saved.
Meanwhile, Doctor stated that the case was highly complicated due to the patient’s previous cesarean deliveries, making saving the mother the top priority.
Emergency surgery was later conducted, but the newborn could not be saved, though the mother survived.
They explained that the woman had undergone two previous cesarean deliveries, which significantly increased the risk of uterine rupture. As a result, saving the mother’s life became the top priority, making it impossible to save the child.
Dr. Appi said that he was informed about the emergency surgery around 7:30 am and reached the hospital after completing her daily morning routine at home. She added that she was not aware of the patient’s medical history beforehand and that despite the shortage of adequate assisting doctors, the surgery was performed solely to save the patient’s life.
Dr. Arghyajyoti Saha, who was reportedly kept as an assistant doctor by Dr. Pinakpani Dutta, stated that the patient had first visited the hospital on January 30, when her low hemoglobin level was detected. He maintained that despite multiple complications, the mother’s life could be saved, but attempting to save the baby might have further endangered her life.
However, the family has leveled serious allegations against senior doctor Dr. Pinakpani Dutta, claiming prolonged negligence. They alleged that he had not been in touch with the patient for nearly a month and repeatedly stated that he was abroad. The family questioned why the seriousness of the condition was not communicated earlier and how such a critical surgery was conducted in a responsible institution with only assistant doctors present.
The controversy has further intensified in light of a past incident. In August last year, a fake doctor named Pulak Malakar associated with the same hospital was arrested for posing as a medical practitioner and allegedly working as Dr. Pinak Pani Dutta’s assistant.
