Medical negligence victim seeks justice

Source: , Posted On:   07 January 2026

T'puram: S Sumayya, a 26-year-old woman from Kattakkada, decided to approach the court seeking legal action against health department and state govt after failing to receive the eligible compensation and a promised govt job following a case of alleged medical negligence. She said at a press conference on Monday that she was left with no option but to pursue legal redress. Despite repeated complaints and assurances, she said the state govt did not fulfil its earlier promises.Sumayya's ordeal dates back to March 22, 2023, when she underwent thyroid gland removal surgery at the General Hospital. During the procedure, a guide wire, a tube-like instrument used to establish a central line for administering medicines and fluids, was inadvertently left inside her chest. The error went undetected until months later, when she began experiencing breathing difficulties and other health issues. Subsequent tests at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology confirmed presence of the wire, which became lodged in her chest and attached to blood vessels, making surgical removal risky. A medical board later warned that removing the wire could cause serious harm and advised keeping it in place under medical supervision. Sumayya's family alleges that the doctor initially tried to conceal the incident. In Sept 2025, Cantonment police arrested the surgeon involved. The health struggles forced Sumayya to quit her job and the family's financial situation deteriorated. TNN
