Trichy: A month after the Tamil Nadu govt promised a swift probe into the death of 20-year-old nursing student Seethalakshmi at MGMGH in Trichy, the inquiry report into the circumstances surrounding her death is still awaited, leaving her family, who are struggling to cope with the loss, searching for answers.Seethalakshmi, a third-year nursing student at KAPV Medical College, was admitted to MGMGH for a septoplasty operation. She suffered a cardiac arrest after being administered anaesthesia and was declared dead on May 23. The death triggered massive protests outside the govt hospital, with fellow students alleging medical negligence. The incident also prompted a visit by minister S Ramesh to meet the protesters, while the govt constituted a 'high-powered' three-member committee to probe the 'adverse medical event.' However, as public attention on the case has waned, Seethalakshmi's family fears the issue may gradually be diluted or forgotten.“The promises made after Seetha’s death appear to have been only to pacify us for that moment. But for a few strong statements from the minister after the death, there has been complete silence. While many matters found space in the assembly, nobody spoke about her. Common people like us do not have the luxury of getting our questions answered,” said V Bhuvaneswari, sister of Seethalakshmi. Recently, the family even visited the Trichy district collector Pratik Dayal and submitted a petition seeking the status of the inquiry report.MGMGH dean S Kumaravel on May 29, citing three adverse cardiac events after administering dexamethasone wrote to the DME urging an analysis of the drug. Subsequently, the TNMSC recalled the batch, and sent the drug to the lab for testing. Following that, drug inspectors from the central drugs standard control organisation (CDSCO), along with state drug control officials, inspected the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) warehouse in Trichy.Seetha was among the three, who faced adverse reactions. However, health officials said a conclusion if the death was because of the drug or any other reason can be arrived at only after the inquiry is over. “We are awaiting a FSL viscera report,” health secretary Darez Ahamed told TOI.Meanwhile, experts said there are some instances where the viscera report can take time, but given the magnitude of the case, the govt could have pushed for it to be expedited. “Throughout the state, there is only one forensic science laboratory. So, all the viscera samples are sent to the only lab. But if the govt prioritised it, they could have received it by now,” former convener of the TRANSTAN Dr Amalorpavanthan said.
