A history of pregnancy often becomes the first chapter of the next one. When that history includes a previous fetal anomaly, doctors are expected to look beyond routine investigations and approach every subsequent pregnancy with greater vigilance. The Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission recently reaffirmed this principle while holding an obstetrician negligent for failing to adequately manage a recognised high-risk pregnancy.

The expectant mother had been under the obstetrician's care throughout her pregnancy. Multiple antenatal sonographies reportedly showed no fetal abnormality, and she was repeatedly reassured that the pregnancy was progressing normally. A Caesarean section was eventually performed, following which a male child was delivered.
