When the Radiology Report Misses What the Eye Can’t Afford to Lose

A nine-year-old boy underwent an MRI scan at a diagnostic centre, accompanied by his father — not on a doctor's advice, but out of parental concern over persistent headaches and declining vision. The imaging was conducted without contrast and, as per the report dated 13 January 2007, no abnormality was detected. The sonologist stated that the orbits and surrounding structures appeared normal and made no mention of any growth or lesion in the ‘sella’ region.

Over the next few weeks, however, the child's vision deteriorated rapidly. Multiple consultations and another MRI — this time a contrast-enhanced scan performed at the same centre — revealed a significant mass compressing the optic nerve. By then, the damage was irreversible.
