Chhattisgarh: Ants crawl on patient's face in ICU in Durg hospital, probe ordered

Durg (Chhattisgarh): The Chhattisgarh health authorities have initiated an inquiry following a complaint that a colony of ants was found crawling on the face of a patient, admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial hospital in the Durg district.

The health authorities have constituted a team to inquire into the complaint of alleged medical negligence.

The team consisting of Durg chief medical and health officer (CMHO) office nodal officer Dr. RK Khandelwal, tehsildar, and a group of other officials visited the hospital after prima facie finding that the incident is serious in nature, reported TOI.

The team will submit the inquiry report to CMHO and the district collector based on which appropriate action will be taken in connection with the incident.

As per the complaint, 69-year-old Ram Sahu was admitted to the Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial hospital as he was having fever, vomiting, stomach ache, and other symptoms. He was later shifted to the ICU of the hospital after his health condition deteriorated.

On September 29, his relatives visited to meet him and found a colony of ants crawling on his face following which they reported the matter to the duty doctor. The patient was subsequently shifted to another bed, reported TOI.

Confirming the complaint about ants crawling on the patient's face by the concerned authorities, CMHO Dr. JP Meshram said that an inquiry has been promptly initiated.

During the inquiry, the officials found that none of the hospital staff was present after 6 pm to attend to the patient.
