Spleen removed or not? Court guts out hospital’s and doctors’ defence

Issue - May - 2024, Posted On:   01 May 2024
This case is an interesting and an unfortunate one for many reasons. Prime among them is how the hospital and its doctors, as reported, tried to cover their mistake and the way in which State Consumer Commission discovered and exposed the folly.

The patient, a wife and a mother, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was admitted to the hospital under care of a team of doctors. At first, she underwent chemotherapy sessions. After about five months, another doctor performed laparoscopic splenectomy. But to no avail; the middle-aged woman kept suffering.

She was admitted yet again after about three months with complains of dehydration and weakness. She succumbed to the ailments after ten days.
